Sonntagberg
Place of pilgrimage with a view
The baroque twin-towered basilica on Sonntagberg is one of the Mostviertel's most striking landmarks. Its location is extraordinary: from the top, the view extends over almost the entire Mostviertel region and far beyond. From the valley, visitors and passers-by can admire the church from afar. Today's "Basilica minor" was built in the 18th century by the baroque master builders Jakob Prandtauer and Josef Munggenast. It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Archangel Michael. The frescoes, the treasury and the high altar are particularly worth seeing.
The basilica belongs to Seitenstetten Abbey and is still a popular destination for pilgrims today. 60 percent of the land in Sonntagberg is used for agriculture. The farmers primarily focus on grassland farming with dairy cows. The landscape is also characterized by a large number of fruit trees. They are in full bloom every spring. Later in the year, the farmers transform the rich harvest into excellent ciders and brandies. Iron has shaped the development of the village for centuries. A document from the year 993, which refers to the former seat of power Gleiß, indicates the mining of iron ore on Sonntagberg.
