Beer, granite, crafts: Advent relaxation in the Waldviertel

Winter hikes in the natural park, beer-tasting in the brewery or a visit to an advent market? Go on a discovery tour in the Waldviertel.

Relaxation, Nature and manufactories – these are the cornerstones of the Waldviertel. Northern Austria is particularly beautiful in winter, when the Advent markets are open and homemade cuisine pampers the palate. Read more on what an unforgettable Waldviertel break looks like here.

Advent, Advent

The accommodation in Waldviertel is diverse, and all of it special! In the Romantik Hotel Goldener Stern in Gmünd, for example, fine connoisseur rooms with a relaxed flair await couples. The Hotel Sole-Felsen-Bad (Saline rock baths) in Gmünd, on the other hand, allow you to get right away from the everyday hustle and bustle and cold temperatures thanks to the in-house thermal baths area, whilst in the treehouses of the Baumhaus Lodge in Schrems, you can enjoy the wintry panorama in the middle of the Waldviertler woods in front of your own wood fire. Wherever you decide to stay, you should not go without an excursion to the mystical Naturpark Blockheide natural park. In order to warm up after your hike, the mulled wine stands at the Zwettler Advent market invite you to partake of their wares. The atmosphere around the Hundertwasser fountain could not be more idyllic thanks to the living nativity scene, horse-drawn carriage rides and the lovingly-crafted work of the Waldviertler artisan trades. In terms of cuisine, we recommend the wonderfully-fragrant farmer’s bread or the full taste of the Kletzenbrot (dried fruit bread) accompanied by salted and smoked meat or greaves.

Today we can window-shop and shop!

A shopping tour might begin, for example, in Heini Staudinger's Waldviertler Werkstätten workshops in Schrems for some shoe shopping. And afterwards, if your stomach is rumbling, enjoy Omas Bruckfleisch (Granny’s meat dish) and a poppy seed soufflé as dessert in the Gasthaus "Zum Waldviertler Sepp” in Schrems. Those wandering around Weitra should pay a visit to Elfi Maisetschlägers traditional costume shop and view the granite jewellery made by Reinhart Kartusch. Our midday tip: the wonderful beer degustation menus featuring Harbacher beef tartar, baked carp, roast beef and beer-chocolate pancakes (!) in the Brauhotel Weitra (beer hotel) Those who prefer a reflective time should visit the Advent days in Weitra at the weekend, where amongst other things authentic Waldviertler Christmas trees or, as a more transportable variation, advent wreaths can be purchased. By the way, a particularly romantic excursion is to take a trip to the location on in the nostalgically furnished Waldviertelbahn (train) from Gmünd.

A final culinary declaration of love

The next morning starts with a city tour through the wonderful Gmünd old town with its impressive Sgrafitto houses. And because walking makes you hungry, off you go to a morning coffee break in the Konditorei Pilz confectioners. Order a piece of beautifully moist Gmünder poppy seed cake; it’s simply wonderful! And we recommend some original Waldviertler Mohnzelten specialities as supplies for your journey home. For midday, it is worth making a stop at the StadtWirtshaus Hopferl restaurant and pub, where creative Waldviertler cuisine is presented to you in the form of carp, dumplings and poppy seed dishes. And enjoy a refreshing craft beer with your food to make your farewells easier!
