Gippel, Göller

Green, greener: Gippel and Göller. These twin peaks are ideal for climbing and hiking enthusiasts as well as for mushroom hunters.

Europe’s last old-growth forests are located between Gippel and Göller. Austria’s most heavily wooded community is at its loveliest against this green backdrop. Mushroom hunters strike it big here and alpinists are elated with local tours and climbs.

The twins of St. Aegyd
For hikers and nature lovers, the twin peaks are a perfect place to get away from it all. Göller is slightly higher than Gippel (1,766 m vs 1,669 m). Both are located in St. Aegyd am Neuwalde, Austria’s most heavily wooded community, and have those forests to thank for their stunning green garb.

Animal stars and walking pros
Besides the lush green idyll, another sight worth visiting is the internationally unique camel theater Kernhof, where alpacas, a monkey troop and a German shepherd play the leads. The best way to explore the region is to take a Nordic walking intro course, a boon for the heart and for circulation.

From mushroom hunting to climbing course
Scenic hikes between the twin peaks pass through lush pastures and an old-growth forest (Lahnsattler), where mushroom hunters usually hit pay dirt. With luck, a deer or two may walk by on Gippelalm or Niederalm. Adventure-seekers can give a go to the high alpine climbing course from Traisenberg to Jodelboden!
