Great show in the snow in February

Winter in Lower Austria is usually at its best when semester break comes along. That ensures a whole lot of fun on and off the slopes.

Snowshoe hiking, snowman building, slalom training or herring feasts: tips about events in February.

White, cold and no school: The semester break is winter sports time in Lower Austria. During the Ötscher Erlebniswochen winter festival in Lackenhof, there is an exciting lineup of events for young and old, including snowshoe hiking, torch-lit skiing and much more! Göstling and the Hochkar ski resort are transformed into an open-air gallery of snowmen. The Snowman Weekend is the event that launches the semester break. Locals and guests alike are warmly invited to build snowmen. Racing Days on Semmering give ambitious amateur skiers the chance to practice the giant slalom under professional conditions and a taste of the atmosphere at a ski race. The highlight is “Race the Night”, with team and individual scoring.

Fresh at the table
Besides winter, people naturally also celebrate carnival in February (called Fasching in Austria) or the end of carnival. A number of Lower Austrian restaurants and inns serve Heringsschmaus, a herring feast, on Ash Wednesday.
