In a bright little brook...

Schubert in Atzenbrugg or Schönberg in Mödling: Memorial sites for musicians in Lower Austria have a lot of history to share.

These include a lock of Franz Schubert’s hair in Atzenbrugg, the thatched home in Rohrau where Joseph and Michael Haydn were born, and a house in Baden, in which Ludwig van Beethoven struggled with his destiny and wrote timeless music.

Famous composers aren’t the only ones to be remembered – people such as Arnold Schönberg, who lived in Mödling or Hugo Wolf, whose footsteps can be followed in Perchtoldsdorf are also commemorated – memorials to musicians across the state are worth a visit. This includes Ignaz Joseph Pleyel, contemporary of Beethoven, who moved from the Ruppersthal in the Weinviertel to distant Paris. The legacy of the most played composer of his time continues to be commemorated with concerts and a museum well worth visiting, which has been installed at his place of birth.

The memory of Benedict Randhartinger, composer, singer and imperial royal court conductor, is honoured in high quality concerts and a thoughtfully curated museum in Ruprechtshofen in the Mostviertel. A lovely tradition has been brought back to life in Schloss Atzenbrugg palace: The place where Franz Schubert spent his summer with friends is the location for high quality Schubertiaden concerts dedicated to the composer.
