Description

The Mehofer family has lived and worked on the Neudeggerhof estate for more than 300 years. Its winery is surrounded by vineyards that are embedded in the soft hills of the Wagram region situated north-west of the Austrian capital, Vienna. Stephan Mehofer is the tenth-generation winemaker and his family’s production is focused on terroir-driven wines, of which Grüner Veltliner, Roter Veltliner and Zweigelt are the most important. These wines are characterized by deep layers of „Loess,” which is a particular type of soil that provides a sound basis for the wines. Furthermore, these wines are strongly influenced by the crispness and elegance of a rather cool Austrian climate. Stephan’s parents decided to produce organically during the late 80's already, and the certification was granted in 1992. The winery therefore, proudly celebrates its 25th organic vintage in 2017. Despite the family’s success, the importance of continuous development to ensure a high level of sustainability is clearly understood. For example, they grow „PIWI“-varieties, extract honey from their own beehives, use renewable resources for building and renovating, fill their wine in light-glass-bottles and grow trees to fill their wood-chip stove. All the mentioned activities are part of a philosophy that influences not only the family’s everyday work and wines, but also their own lives and the lives of the coming generations.
