Description

The entire area is located in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. Most of the mixed forest is owned by the Austrian Federal Forests.

On the wooded summit is the Höllensteinhaus, a house for nature lovers, with the Julienturm lookout tower, which was built in 1880 and redesigned in 1896 and raised for a better view. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Vienna Woods from the walled lookout point. The adjoining Höllensteinhaus offers refreshments and overnight accommodation.

The Höllenstein is a popular destination for day trippers from the Vienna area. The summit is located in the municipality of Kaltenleutgeben, but there are ascents on wide hiking trails from various sides. The steeper ascents start at Kaltenleutgeben (45 minutes) and Wasserspreng (45 minutes), while the flatter ascents start from Gießhübl (1 hour) or Sittendorf (municipality of Wienerwald).

The observation tower was built in 1880 by the Naturefriends Mödling section of Hinterbrühl. The construction was made financially possible by the then section chairman Franz Ritter Regenhart von Zápory, who donated around half of the total amount. The tower therefore bears the name of his wife Julie. In 1896, the tower was raised to more than 10 meters.

Accessibility for hikers
There are various ascent options with different durations: from Wasserspreng or Kaltenleutgeben, access to the Höllensteinhaus takes around 45 minutes, but is rather steep. From Gießhübl or Sulz, the ascent takes around 1 hour, from Perchtoldsdorfer Heide around 2.5 hours.
