Horn

The town of Horn is the center of the Horn Basin in the Waldviertel, close to the Weinviertel and administrative center of the district of the same name. Crossed by the river Taffa, the municipal area includes the villages of Breiteneich, Doberndorf, Horn, Mödring and Mühlfeld.

The first settlements took place around 30,000 years ago. The first documentary mention of the town dates back to the 11th century. The "Horner Bund" of 1608 made Horn Protestant - until the Counter-Reformation. Today, the school, administrative and shopping town is considered the center of the eastern Waldviertel.

Horn:

Sights & Excursion destinations

Several monuments, the plague column and Horn's churches are well worth seeing: the Old Parish Church of St. Stephen, the New Parish Church of St. George and the Piarist Church with its monastery and library. Another historical eye-catcher is the magnificent Horn Castle from the 12th century. The newly designed town lake and the town park in Horn invite visitors all year round.

The Horn Museum (formerly the Höbarth and Mader Museum)

The Museum Horn consists of one of the largest prehistory exhibitions in Lower Austria. Next to it is the 1,500 m² exhibition Mensch.Boden.Technik - 7500 years of agriculture.

The former Bürgerspital houses exhibitions on the history of the town and the Reformation. The antique cabinet, mineral exhibition, lapidarium and various special exhibitions round off the offer.

Interactive stations for children including a giant silo slide. The museum is very family-friendly, barrier-free and, of course, dogs are also very welcome. April - Nov. Tue-Sun 10 am - 4 pm

The Horner outdoor pool area has been converted into the STADTSEE recreation area, which is not only open to bathers during the summer, but is also accessible all year round and free of charge.

Rope-pulling rafts
Children's bathing area
Mud play area
Huge children's playground
Hammocks, wooden decks and sunbathing area
Beach volleyball court

Culture:

The chamber music festival Allegro Vivo as well as a wide range of events and educational programs are at home in the Kunsthaus Horn - with its exceptionally beautiful arcaded courtyard.

City wall town:

Horn's town wall runs largely around the three-sided main square and is largely preserved, although many parts of the fortifications have been integrated into the courtyards of the houses. The three gates leading into the town were demolished in the 19th century. Well-preserved rectangular battlements can be seen on Robert Hamerling-Straße.
