Where the glass is always half-full: Wagram wine region

Cycle down the wine cellar lanes and walk through the vineyards, and experience Wagram first hand. You can also get a taste of it.

The area around Wagram impresses with idyllic wine cellar lanes and special varieties. Here, wine is made using both green and red Veltliner grapes. With just one sip of a noble ice wine, you will experience a noble-sweet taste explosion.

Where red and green Veltliner grapes grow: The Wagram Weinstrasse wine route

To the north of the Danube, between Feuersbrunn and Stetteldorf, the Wagram reaches skywards. At the heart of the region is part of the 2,400 hectare wine-producing area. In addition to the traditional wine town of Klosterneuburg, it is home to numerous taverns. The loess soils of the area form the best basis for finely-spiced, powerful wines that develop a typical creaminess on the palate. Both green and red Veltliner grapes have a deep-rooted tradition here. Even today, their rarity is lovingly cherished by local winemakers. Noble ice wines are also a particular speciality; and more recently, the potential of red wines has gained in recognition.

Rolling down the wine cellar lanes: Our cycling tips

Wagram and its delicacies are best discovered from the saddle. We are great fans of the five different Wagram discovery tours, which lead through untouched riparian forests and sun-drenched vineyards, to hidden viewpoints. The “Danube” and “Garden” routes are suitable for families and pleasure cyclists, while anyone who is looking for inclines and challenges will love the “Wine cellar”, “Loess soil”or “Wagram” tours. Meanwhile, mountain bikers will enjoy the Kellergassen-Rundtour (Wine cellar lane circular tour), which boasts wonderful views and numerous refreshment stops, including the idyllic wine cellar lanes of Feuersbrunn and the Weritas wine shop in Kirchberg am Wagram.

For wine lovers and families: Our insider tips

The best way to explore the region on foot (and to taste it) is to take a guided wine cellar tour in Fels am Wagram. The “Hammergraben to Steinagrund” tour is all about discovering the wonderful world of wine in and above the ravines. During the tour, you will hear fascinating stories from both wine-making years gone by, and more recent times. For families, there is also a special guided tour with a vineyard walk, which gives you an insight into the life of the vine, the soil, and the making of grape juice. Every Saturday at 3:00 p.m., the vineyard fairy tells wine-related stories. The meeting point is at the foot of the Hammergraben.
