Autumn in Lower Austria

The Indian summer in Lower Austria is colourful, framed by culinary and vinophile delicacies.

Whether it's the hustle and bustle in the cellar lanes, enjoyable harvest festivals, holidays at the vintner's, picnics, endless cycle paths or tempting hiking routes - variety and relaxation are writ large in Lower Austria's autumn.

From autumn leaves to the first dusting of snow

Hardly any precipitation and the scent of freshly pressed grapes and ripe apples are in the air. Nature bathes the seemingly endless golden-yellow rows of vines in soft colours. Every now and then, mysterious wafts of mist drift across the gently rolling landscape: autumn is the ideal season for explorers, adventurers, hikers, cycling enthusiasts and, above all, for lovers of pleasure.

Wine, must and pumpkin

Let the autumn festivities begin!  Autumn cider, autumn hiking and autumn wine - a trio that can be experienced to the fullest, especially now. The pumpkin weeks in the Retz region and the Waldviertel fishing festivals, where the carp makes its final appearance, are really tasty. Things get festive in mid-November, when the Martinigansl (St. Martin's goose) is served with the first young wines and the traditional Fasslrutschen (barrel slide) in Klosterneuburg commemorates the patron saint of Lower Austria (St. Leopold, 15 November). Meanwhile, culture is celebrated on the Danube at "Wachau in Echtzeit" and the longest bar in the world in the Vienna Woods.
