Pöggstall

The market town of Pöggstall in the district of Melk lies in the idyllic valley of the Weitenbach stream. The village was first mentioned in documents in 1188 and the construction of the castle probably began around 1260. Exciting sights bear witness to the long history of the municipality to this day. Holidaymakers and excursionists feel particularly at home here: dreamy hiking and cycling routes lead through the unspoiled landscape. Due to the mild climate, Pöggstall is often referred to as the "Merano of the Waldviertel".

Culture in the castle

The stately Pöggstall Castle is a magnet for visitors of all ages. The magnificent building with its cannon roundel was built in the 13th century. Today, seasonal events such as the annual Advent market take place here. The castle is also home to the Museum of Legal History with torture chamber, the Franz Traunfellner documentation and the Pöggstall Castle exhibition "Between the Region and the Imperial Court".

Worth seeing

  • Parish and castle church in Pöggstall: late Gothic hall church with two naves
  • Parish and pilgrimage church "Maria Himmelfahrt" in Neukirchen am Ostrong. Gothic church with a Romanesque core from the 12th century
  • Church of St. Anna im Felde above Pöggstall: a Gothic building from the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • The branch church in Würnsdorf dedicated to the holy apostles Peter and Paul was first mentioned in a document in 1544.

Public arrival and departure

Bus/Train
From Melk train station, you can take the 790 bus to the "Hauptplatz Pöggstall" stop. From there it is a 2-minute walk to the castle.
