If you enjoy following in the footsteps of historical figures while hiking on the Rax, the Ottohaus at 1,644 meters above sea level is the perfect spot for you. Sigmund Freud, the famous founder of psychoanalysis, was a regular guest at the Knappenhof in Reichenau an der Rax and frequently hiked along the Törlweg up to the mountain hut. The hut was built as early as 1893 and named after Archduke Otto of Austria.

Today, the Ottohaus is a popular starting point, stopover, or place to stay overnight on the Rax Plateau. It offers both rooms and dormitory beds, ideal for anyone who wants to try “hut hopping” —a hike from hut to hut through the impressive mountain landscape of the Rax.

Enjoyment with a Panoramic View

Whether dining on the terrace or relaxing at the nearby observation tower —the view is simply breathtaking. The panorama stretches from the striking Felstörl all the way down into the valley, while you refuel with homemade mountain hut cuisine.

Hiking Tips:

Around the Ottohaus:

  • Rax Alpine Garden: Discover around 200 native mountain plants
  • Lookout Tower: Right next to the Ottohaus is a lookout tower offering sweeping views of the entire Schwarza Valley
