Cross-country skiing

In the Waldviertel, Mostviertel and Vienna Alps regions, there are a total of over 700 km of groomed classic cross-country trails and over 320 km of skating trails. The offer ranges from short practice circuits to high-altitude trails.

Many areas offer taster courses and technique training with hire equipment. Gentle cross-country skiing areas with short circuits and clear signposting are particularly suitable. If you would like to try out cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or ski touring as easily as possible, you have the opportunity to do so on a three-hour course as part of the taster days in Lower Austria. You will be accompanied by professional guides who will take your first steps with you and give you the best tips and tricks.

Several cross-country ski areas, such as those in Puchenstuben-Turmkogel, St. Aegyd, Gutenbrunn and Bärnkopf, have hire points at the trail entrances or in nearby inns/businesses.

Most centres maintain their own trail reports, often linked to platforms such as bergfex.at or the websites of the respective destination. The trail report collection on bergfex.at also provides a quick overview of regions in Lower Austria.
