Certified Hiking Villages in Lower Austria

What are hiking villages?

In nine certified hiking villages in Lower Austria, the nature experience begins right in the heart of the village. As starting points for hikes lasting several days, they combine a diverse network of trails with personal hospitality and encounters with the people who live here.

The six alpine hiking villages are characterised by scenic summit tours and gentle alpine hikes.

Zwettl

Waldviertel

Zwettl combines lively small-town life with tranquil natural surroundings: as a certified hiking village, you can expect scenic trails through the characteristic valley basin landscape around Kamp and Zwettl, along fjord-like river courses, through granite gorges and to hidden water spots. A special highlight is the Auf Hundertwassers Spuren No. 55a hiking trail. You can spend restful nights at certified hiking accommodation providers such as the Schwarz Alm Zwettl or the Faulenzerhotel Schweighofer in Friedersbach.

Yspertal

Waldviertel

The Great Ysper gently yet powerfully shapes the southern Waldviertel region. At the heart of the Yspertal valley lies the Ysperklamm gorge, where footbridges and bridges lead through almost untouched nature. The certified Druidenweg – Ysperklamm No. 31 trail first runs through the gorge and then past striking rock formations up to the Kaltenberg. At 1,061 metres, the Große Peilstein is also the highest peak in the Ostrong. Incidentally, you are in good hands at the certified hiking establishments Gasthof-Hotel zur Linde and Wirtshausbrennerei Kren.

Harbach Moor Bath

Waldviertel

For over 20 years, Moorbad Harbach has been synonymous with relaxation in the heart of nature. As a hiking village, it combines mindfulness with around 80 kilometres of marked hiking trails through hilly landscapes past granite formations and streams. Destinations such as the Nebelstein (1,017 m) or the viewing platform on the Mandelstein invite you to pause and reflect. As certified hiking establishments, the Märchenhotel Waldpension Nebelstein and the Gasthof-Pension Nordwald, among others, ensure a relaxing hiking holiday.
