Where to go cycling?
Or rather, to glide along the river, to take a deep breath in the forest, to roll between the vines. Whether it's a multi-day classic or short sections - we get on our bikes and let the landscape tell the story.
Over hill and dale through Lower Austria: scenic peaks, vast forests and pure flow await you on the mountain bike trails - from the Vienna Alps to the Waldviertel.
Carefully maintained, cleverly guided and informatively signposted throughout, the top cycling routes lead through the vast province of Lower Austria on around 1,500 kilometres.
The main season is usually from spring to autumn. In the summer months, river cycle paths are particularly attractive, while spring and autumn are the best time for wine journeys with the associated wine cycle paths. The mountain biking season usually starts in March/April and lasts until the end of October. When planning your route, it is worth choosing tours according to temperature, wind and risk of thunderstorms - and for longer routes, plan stages so that shade, refreshment stops and rest areas are well distributed.
Yes, many routes can be planned so that you can arrive by train or bus, shorten sections en route or return to the starting point at the end without having to travel back the same way. This is particularly practical for long-distance tours and day trips of flexible length.
In the summer months, you can also use special cycle hitchhiking buses or cycle taxi services along some cycle routes. For more detailed information, please refer directly to the detailed pages of the respective cycle routes.
Here you will find an overview of the options for taking bicycles on buses and trains. More detailed information can be found on the transport company's website.
ÖBB long-distance transport: usually limited bike spaces, reservation often required.
ÖBB regional transport: usually without reservation, but subject to space. A special bike ticket is required.
VOR Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region: On VOR regional buses, bicycles may only be taken on special bicycle hitchhiking buses (exception: folded bicycles).
Regional/private railways may have their own rules: On the Mariazell railway, a separate bicycle ticket must be purchased and advance reservation is strongly recommended. On the Wachau railway, bicycles may be taken along free of charge, but a free reservation of a parking space is mandatory. It is also free of charge to take your bike on the Waldviertelbahn and the Reblaus Express, and we recommend reserving a parking space in advance. It is generally not possible to take bikes on the Wiener Lokalbahnen (with the exception of folding bikes).
Tip: Before setting off, briefly check the respective connection (bike parking spaces/rules) - this will save you any surprises.
For cycling holidays and multi-day tours, cycle-friendly businesses, the so-called Cycle Partners of Lower Austria, can help - ideal if you are specifically looking for accommodation with suitable services (e.g. secure parking facilities, tools/info). These businesses are usually located along popular cycle routes and are therefore easy to find.
Yes - on selected routes, luggage transport from accommodation to accommodation is already organised. You cycle the day's stages with a light day rucksack, while your large luggage is already waiting at the next accommodation in the evening. You can find such packages in the Waldviertel or along the Danube, for example.
You can hire bikes from many accommodation providers or from hire companies . If you want to go on short tours, you can also hire a bike from Nextbike. The bike can be hired at many Nextbike locations and does not have to be returned to the same location. Note: Niederösterreich-CARD holders cycle free of charge for one day at nextbike!
In many regions, you will find e-bike/E-MTB hire as well as charging and service stations along the routes. When planning, it is advisable to include charging points as fixed points (break/route) - especially for longer stages or more metres in altitude.
