Lebensweg

Southern Waldviertel

An eight-stage loop with 13 stages. The route from the Ysper-Weitental and Kremstal leads through forests, gorges and to viewpoints. Along the route, places symbolise the stages of life.

  • Highlights (in stages): Peilstein (1), Herzstein (2), Ysperklamm (3), Edlesberger See (5), Gudenushöhle (7), Wachtstein (9), Schloss Pöggstall (10), Maria Taferl (13)
  • Best time to hike: April to October; tip: poppy blossom from the beginning to the end of July
  • Good to know: Access possible at any point along the trail, but only one walking direction recommended due to the markings
  • The rolling hills and lush forests are perfect for unforgettable hikes. Here, where nature is in full bloom, visitors can enjoy the fresh mountain air and unwind.

Wachau World Heritage Trail

Danube in Lower Austria

14 stages lead north and south of the Danube along the famous primary rock terraces, where the wines of the Wachau thrive and the best wine taverns can be found.

  • Highlights (in stage): Krems (1), Dürnstein castle ruins and pulpit (2), Michaelerberg and Red Gate (3), Jauerling (5), Melk Abbey (9), Aggstein ruins (10), Seekopf (11)
  • Best time to hike: March to November (Wine Autumn); tip: apricot blossom between March and April
  • Good to know: Stages 1-3 are among the most popular, 10-11 are considered challenging; possibility of luggage transport

By the way: If the World Heritage Trail is not long enough for you, you can extend it with the Kremstal or Nibelungengau long-distancehiking trails. Both hiking trails border directly on the World Heritage Trail and can therefore be ideally combined.

Luchs Trail

Mostviertel

In the footsteps of the lynx, the trail leads through Austria's "wild" centre: Through the Kalkalpen and Gesäuse National Parks as well as the Dürrenstein wilderness area in the Mostviertel. 5 of the 13 daily stages open up the particularly unspoilt nature of the wilderness area.

  • Highlights (in stage): Gamsstein and Mendlingtal (9), Hochkar and high moor Leckermoos (10), Dürrenstein (11), Obersee-Mittersee-Lunzer See (12), Ötscher and Ötschergräben (13)
  • Best time to hike: Mid-May to the end of October; Tip: Particularly worth seeing in autumn due to the colourful nature
  • Good to know: Individual planning with luggage transport, shuttle and booking service possible via Trail Angels
