Long-distance hiking trails

Trails with flexible entry points are suitable for starting out on long-distance hikes. It is recommended not to hike more than 20 kilometres per day. In Lower Austria, the Lebensweg and the Wachau World Heritage Trail are particularly suitable for this. They can be walked at your own pace and offer refreshment stops and overnight accommodation directly along the way.

There are inns and accommodation along the long-distance hiking trails in many communities. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance, especially in the high season or in huts.

Along the Wachau World Heritage Trail, wine taverns and wine hotels invite you to stop off and stay overnight. The following accommodation is particularly recommended on the popular stages 1 to 3: Steigenberger Hotel & Spa in Krems, Hotel Schloss Dürnstein and Boutiquehotel WeinSpitz.

There are several hotels and inns in the participating communities along the Lebensweg, such as Schreiners - das Waldviertelhaus in Münichreith (stage 1), Wirtshausbrennerei Krenn in Yspertal (stage 2), Vivea Hotel Bad Traunstein (stage 8), Residenz Schloss Pöggstall (stage 10) or Hotel Schachner in Maria Taferl (stage 12).

Most long-distance hiking trails in Lower Austria are easily accessible from spring to autumn. The best time may vary depending on the altitude. Alpine routes are ideal in summer and early autumn.

Partly yes. Some long-distance hiking trails in Lower Austria are also accessible in winter, especially at lower altitudes such as in the Wachau or in the Waldviertel. Alpine sections can, however, be difficult due to snow, ice or barriers. Good equipment, up-to-date weather information and flexible stage planning are important.
