Always changing: Wiener Neustadt
Wiener Neustadt attracts culture lovers, visitors and café connoisseurs in equal measure and impresses with its outstanding cuisine.
Whether wandering around the city centre, walking the historic trails or relaxing in one of the delightful cafés: Wiener Neustadt combines the brighter sides of life with the past. Read below to find out more about what you can discover and where.
Walking through the past
A great way to discover Wiener Neustadt is on one of the historic walking tours. During one tour, we visited the castle, one of the city's landmarks, as well as the museum. The large park of the Theresian Military Academy and the wonderful water tower at the castle are particularly impressive. A must-see on walks through the city: The impressive Stadttheater city theatre in the former Carmelite church, presents a programme ranging from children's theatre to operettas. The Stadtmuseum Wiener Neustadt [Wiener Neustadt city museum] is also worth visiting. It has a permanent exhibition on the history of the city as well as changing exhibitions. These excursions can also be perfectly combined with visits to the wonderful coffee houses in Wiener Neustadt. The quickest way to get from A to B is on two wheels. Simply pick up a bike from one of the many Next-Bike stations.
City centre = shopping mile
The heart of Wiener Neustadt is situated around the late Romanesque cathedral, with wonderful cafés and restaurants on every corner that are all worth a visit. Let us share a few of our favourites with you, which can be perfectly combined with a shopping tour. One that combines both is the Leopold Café and Fashion. We fell head over heels for the casual outfits, cool interior and amazingly tasty coffee and cake! After browsing the amazing range of books in Buchhandlung Thiel bookshop, we enjoyed an unparalleled ice-cream at Eis-Greissler from the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’. Our editorial team favourites are ‘Graumohn’ poppy seed and blueberry yoghurt! We have two recommendations for evening meals: take a trip to either Hartig’s Heuriger am Dom, offering a traditional no-nonsense menu with traditional pub grub. We recommend the delicious baked potatoes filled with broccoli – they melt in your mouth. Or for another culinary treat, try a 5-course menu called ‘Neues Backhaus’ with wine in Bernhard Gruber’s gourmet restaurant ‘Altes Backhaus’– the award-winning set menu is served every second Wednesday evening, inspired by a certain theme, accompanied by fine wines. It always promises to be a gastronomic delight. We were completely blown away! While the day away in the pleasant surroundings of Einhorn: take time to relax and enjoy life against the wonderfully lit backdrop of the inner courtyard bursting with oleanders with a glass of wine or a pint of beer (also available on tap) in hand.
Lively alleys, Marienmarkt market and street art
To authentically experience the small town flair and culinary specialities of the area surrounding Wiener Neustadt, we recommend visiting the Marienmarkt market at the Hauptplatz square. This is where the locals buy meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables straight from the region or enjoy a small snack; this might be something from the Würstl Boutique Wilzcek sausage shop, which has been a firm fixture of the main square since the 1960s. The Straßen.Kunst.Festival Wiener Neustadt street art festival is a highly anticipated event that takes place in early summer. It is a regional highlight, where the town’s steets burst with life and a colourful assortment of breath-taking music, artistry and acrobatics from across the world! From the monastery chapel to the city theatre: The history of the Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt theatre is like a play. Built for the Carmelites in 1668, it was turned into a secular institution in 1794 under the reign of Joseph II. Today, it can hold 624 theatre fans. The varied programme ranges from children's theatre to musicals to cabaret and surprises audiences not just with the diverse content, but also the excellent productions and talented actors, who have trodden the boards of the theatre.
