Description

The market town of Bad Traunstein lies in the heart of the Waldviertel. Enjoy art in its highest form during a visit to the modern parish church and the Josef Elter Museum, built under pastor and sculptor Prof. Josef Elter. Your stay is rounded off by the unique landscape with the stone giants, the sculpture garden, the herb show garden and the adventure playground for children near the bathing pond.

Josef Elter was a priest and deeply rooted in the Christian faith. He understood his work in the broadest sense as a proclamation of God. Many of his sculptures reflect Christian symbols or messages of salvation.

Josef Elter (born 1926 in Kernei, Batschka, SRB) was pastor of Bad Traunstein from 1957 until his death in 1997. From 1959 - 62 he built the modern parish church of Bad Traunstein together with the local population. From 1967, he created sculptures in stone and wood, as well as woodcuts. At the center of his work was the search for a reduced form with great universal expression. His works can be viewed in the Josef Elter exhibition center (built in 1992), which he designed and built.
