Auxiliarkastell Carnuntum
Museum
Description
The Auxiliary Fort was a military facility for Roman auxiliary troops built towards the end of the 1st century AD and is now a museum.
Opened in 1989 and renovated in 2008, the museum presents the exhibitions "The Equestrian Camp of Carnuntum" and "The Ancient Water World of Carnuntum". In the basement of the museum is a real rarity: the crossing structure. A main sewer that crosses a drinking water pipe of the equestrian camp, contrary to all ancient building regulations. A lapidarium with twelve gravestones from a cemetery around the Auxiliary Fort can also be seen in the garden. The biographies of former inhabitants carved in stone provide personal insights into their private lives.
