Description

The 569-metre-high Brandstetterkogel is the highest elevation on the Neustadtler Platte in the market town of Neustadtl an der Donau. It is located in the Strudengau nature reserve in Lower Austria.

At an altitude of 519 meters above sea level, a viewing platform and a peace cross were erected on a hilltop of the Brandstetterkogel. The Brandstetterkogelhütte, also known as the Viktoria-Adelheid-Schutzhütte, is located at a further elevation of 532 meters.

The hut is the destination point of the regional Matrassteig hiking trail.

Hikes on the Brandstetterkogel

  • The Matrassteig trail, starting from the Greiner Donaubrücke bridge, winds its way up the Brandstetterkogel like a high mountain trail over an altitude difference of almost 300 meters. A unique experience on the rugged slopes of the Strudengau. Duration approx. 1:45 h
  • The 540 km long Donau-Höhen-Rundwanderweg, which runs from Passau to Ybbs an der Donau, leads along the Danube ridge through 60 villages and also passes the Brandstetterkogel and the refuge. Duration approx. 8 hours

Sights in the surrounding area

  • In the Strudengau region, the Freyenstein castle ruins are a listed building. It lies high above the municipality of Freienstein - and around 4 kilometers from the town of Neustadtl an der Donau. Its wooded location on a narrow rocky ridge can be reached via an easily accessible hiking trail from the valley.
  • At the Nadlingerhof, a four-sided farmhouse dating back to the 15th century, visitors are introduced to farming culture and Mostviertel delights.
