Burg Rappottenstein
Fortress
Description
One of the oldest castles in the north-western Waldviertel region stands proudly and stylishly on a granite hill in the valley of the Kleiner Kamp.
Rappottenstein Castle was of great importance from the very beginning. On the one hand, it was located in the middle of the extensive Kuenringer estate, making it a stable center in a turbulent time, but on the other hand, it also protected the ancient connecting path ("Pehamsteig"), which can still be traced in the municipal area today and led from the Danube through the northern forest to the Bohemian countryside.
In addition, Rappottenstein Castle was one of the strongest links in the chain of fortifications along the course of the Kamp river, which had the task of protecting the country from Bohemian invasions and thus also providing flank protection for the Babenberg margraviate.
Rappottenstein is a fortress that clearly shows three building periods: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance.
The southern part of the stronghold dates back to the Kuenringer period. Its massive walls, which tower windowless above the steep granite rock and formed the original defensive structure, greet visitors before they enter the fortress. The walls stand at an obtuse angle to each other, their foundations following the course of the rock.
At the highest point of the rock massif, the keep guards the complex. Between it and the gate tower, which once towered over the strong walls and blocked the entrance to the stronghold, are the oldest buildings of the castle courtyard from the second half of the 12th century. The outer bailey is a sophisticated defensive system of eight gates and five courtyards - only those who conquer these can enter the stronghold.
During a guided tour of the castle, you will gain an insight into the castle dungeon and can marvel at the three-storey arcades with sgraffito decoration in the inner courtyard. The frescoes in the interior rooms are among the rare examples of 16th century secular painting in Lower Austria.
