Gozzoburg

The Gozzoburg is located in the middle of the medieval town center of Krems and is considered one of the most important medieval inner-city buildings in Austria.

The so-called Gozzoburg is considered one of the most important medieval inner-city buildings in Austria. Its eventful history began in the 13th century and continues to occupy building researchers, historians and art historians to this day.

Despite its name, the Gozzo Castle is not a castle in the conventional sense, but rather the living and working palace of a citizen of Krems - his name was Gozzo.
Gozzo came from the northern Weinviertel and married Gerbirg Sevelderin, a burgher's daughter from Stein, around 1247. He was a town magistrate, head of the customs and toll office and administrator of the sovereign's property. After the death of his wife in 1286, he retired as a monk to the Cistercian monastery in Zwettl.
The town palace named after him still impresses today with its high-quality artistic furnishings. In addition to the coat of arms hall, the monumental murals in the representative room of the residential wing are among the most important fresco cycles of the 13th century north of the Alps.

Today, the Gozzo Castle is home to the IMC FH Krems, the Lower Austria department of the Federal Monuments Office and the Gozzo restaurant.
