Schaubergwerk Grillenberg

Museum

Description

The gateway to ore!

The Grillenberg show mine in Payerbach is a historically preserved ironstone mine and is one of the two show mines in Lower Austria alongside the Seegrotte in Hinterbrühl.

The mine is entered through the Herlindestollen tunnel. The path leads between the rails, along colorful dripstones, into the mountain. At the filling point, you come across the mighty iron-bearing layers. The tunnels also branch out here. One of them leads to a submerged sinkhole, through which the ore was once mined from a depth of 120 meters.

Why it's worth a visit:

  • Excitement and adventure for all ages: guided tours for ages 4 and up make the visit an exciting experience. The guides accompany the guests and impart interesting facts about the ironstone mining history of the upper Schwarzatal.
  • Discover the animal world in the tunnel: The show mine is home to rare cave animals such as cave grasshoppers, fire salamanders and several species of bat - including the greater horseshoe bat, a species threatened with extinction.
  • Excursion regardless of the weather: whether it's sunny, hot or raining - the temperature in the cave is a constant 8 °C all year round. With warm clothing and sturdy footwear, the visit is worthwhile whatever the weather.
  • Rock nature trail with a view: On the way to the mine, a nature trail leads along the historic ore trail. The Haldenkopf offers a magnificent view of the Schwarzatal and the Rax. Numerous information boards provide interesting facts about typical Austrian rock types.
  • Individually guided tours: Tailor-made guided tours are offered for groups of 5 or more, adapted to the age and level of knowledge of the visitors.
