Description
At around 300 hectares, the Schrems high moor in Lower Austria is the largest moor in the province and a fascinating excursion destinations for nature lovers. Since 2000, a third of the area has been a nature reserve and forms the Schrems High Moor Nature Park. Visitors can expect untouched nature, rare animal and plant species and impressive insights into the world of moors.
A special highlight is the 20-metre-high "Himmelsleiter" viewing platform, which is located near the entrance to the nature park. Those who climb the 100 or so steps are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Schrems moor landscape.
The moor provides a protected habitat for numerous rare species, including the moor frog, the marsh iris, the yellow water lily and the carnivorous sundew. Along the Moor History Trail, visitors can explore the various stages of regeneration of the former peat bog and learn exciting facts about the sensitive moor ecosystem.
A walk from the UnterWasserReich to the Himmelsleiter leads through a unique landscape in which nature, tranquillity and knowledge are ideally combined. The Schrems high moor is therefore a perfect destination for hikers, families and anyone who wants to experience the pristine beauty of Lower Austria.
