Description
A place of contemplation, encounter and dialog
The Museum am Dom, formerly the Diocesan Museum, was founded in 1888 and is the oldest diocesan museum in Austria. It is located on the first floor of the abandoned Augustinian canons' monastery in St. Pölten and also includes the monastery library. The collection is very heterogeneous and includes altars, sculptures and paintings as well as a large number of liturgical textiles (paraments) and vessels (chalices, monstrances etc.).
The newly designed permanent exhibition offers a modern overview of ecclesiastical art from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Special exhibitions with annually changing themes complement this.
A special feature in the provincial capital of St. Pölten is hidden in the basement of the museum: in the former air raid shelter on Domplatz, an exhibition on the situation of the diocese during the Second World War can be visited in the original rooms.
