Lohnbachfall
Ponds, lakes and springs
Description
The Lohnbach Falls in the Waldviertel impress with wild masses of water that plunge up to eight meters into the depths over several sections. Sometimes as a gentle, babbling brook, sometimes as a thundering waterfall, the Lohnbach shows the whole variety of flowing water. Underground waterfalls and small cascades add to the natural spectacle. The moss-covered granite rocks in particular give the gorge its unique character and make it a natural monument in the European nature reserve "Waldviertler Teich-, Moor- und Heidelandschaft".
The Lohnbach Falls are worth seeing all year round - in winter the water freezes into bizarre ice sculptures. During the snowmelt or after rainfall, the stream shows its full, wild potential. Take care on the footbridge in snow and ice. The steep slopes of the gorge and the untouched nature make for a romantic, natural experience.
Hikers can explore the Lohnbach Falls via the secured footbridge. The Great Bear Trail continues above the waterfall to Altmelon or Pretrobruck. The variants of the Lohnbachfall trail are suitable for shorter tours.
The Gasthof-Pension Seidl in Pretrobruck, where regional products are served, is a great place to stop for a bite to eat. If you want to experience more wild water in the Waldviertel, you should also visit the Höllfall or the Weißenbachklamm gorge.
