Peilstein im Yspertal
Outdoor adventure
Description
The Peilstein in the Yspertal shows that the Waldviertel has more to offer than just rolling hills. As the highest point of the Ostrong mountain range, it attracts hikers with magnificent views over the Ysper and Weitental valleys. The direct ascent from Laimbach via the Schneidermauer and the Kleiner Peilstein to the Großer Peilstein is particularly popular. It takes just over an hour to reach the summit, where an impressive view of the rolling hills of Lower Austria awaits.
At 1,061 meters, the Großer Peilstein is the highest point on the eastern ridge. From here, the view extends far into the southern Waldviertel. The Kleiner Peilstein is considered the more exciting and wilder summit. Its rocky spur with summit cross conveys an almost alpine feeling, while the green plateau of the Waldviertel spreads out at its feet. The difference in altitude of around 500 meters makes the houses of Laimbach seem tiny. An entry in the summit book is a must here. The striking rock formations with gnarled old trees and dead wood below the Kleiner Peilstein and at the Schneidermauer are particularly worthwhile photo opportunities.
Local legends, such as the one about the lonely fish in the Ostrong, which is said to have been caught in a hidden lake, are also a special feature. Hikes in the Waldviertel therefore not only offer an experience of nature, but also stories and legends. If you wish, you can combine a visit to the Peilstein with other tours such as the Mandelstein near Harbach, the Nebelstein or the Kaiserstein-Peilstein circular hiking trail from Münichreith. The Peilstein is a must for anyone who wants to experience the Waldviertel in an active and varied way.
