Ruine-Röthelstein

Ruins, Scenic lookout

Description

The Röthelstein ruins are located on a 30-metre-high rocky outcrop on the Danube east of Hainburg, directly opposite the ruins of Theben on the Arpad Rock in Slovakia.

For centuries, Röthelstein secured the flow of the Danube on the Austrian side, while Theben did the same for the Hungarians and Slovaks. The first documented mention of Röthelstein Castle dates back to 1180. The first known Röthelsteiners were Ulrich, Heinrich and Irnfried, who were ministers of the Vohburgers, once one of the most powerful noble families in this area, between 1170 and 1209 and were in their service as lords of the castle.

There is a wonderful view of the Danube!
