Schloss Petronell-Carnuntum

Castle

Description

Construction of the square, two-storey Petronell Castle began in the 11th century.

Over the course of time, the changing owners repeatedly extended and rebuilt the original moated castle.

It took on its present form in the 17th century. As with the construction of the Schüttkasten and the Tiergarten wall, many a column, capital and gravestone from the nearby Roman ruins were used for the now uniform Baroque design of the castle.

The showpiece of this Petronell sight is the magnificent Knights' Hall with its frescoes. The square inner courtyard is also beautiful, with a water basin at its center. Today the castle is owned by the Abensperg-Traun family.

Not open to the public.
