Sitzenberg Castle

Castle

Description

Four onion towers attest to the formidability of the prior fortress. Four stairways lead to several terraces that afford views far into the countryside. It has housed a secondary school since 1951 specializing in agriculture and dietics.

Sitzenberg is an ancient town and the castle was once known as "Sitz- am- Berg” (seat on the mountain). It was the property of the Styrian princes as early as the 12th c; later of the Vogt (reeve) of the cathedral chapter of Regensburg and of Duke Friedrich II, the Quarrelsome, who then enfeoffed the castle to a vassal.

There is a lovely pond near Sitzenberg Castle.

Top cultural events are staged at the castle including concerts and a summer festival every summer.
