Wachtstein bei Bad Traunstein

Outdoor adventure

Description

Hikers can enjoy an impressive view from the Wachtstein at 958 meters; on clear days, the view extends as far as the Ötscher and Schneeberg. However, the summit rock offers more than just enjoyment of nature: events such as the Wachtstein Festival or the Brassstein Festival transform the mountain into a lively meeting place. The huge granite blocks tell a story: millions of years old, formed by tectonic forces and water, they originate from the Variscan primeval mountains. In the past, the Wachtstein was part of the chain of chalk fires between Jauerling, Anschau Castle and Arbesbach Castle. These medieval warning fires were used to signal danger at an early stage. The name of the mountain probably stems from its function as a lookout point.

Below the viewing platform, colorful furniture invites you to linger, the "outdoor living room" offers peace and color in the midst of nature. The Wachtstein is an ideal hiking destination: the Stein-Gigantenweg trail no. 51 takes 1.5 hours over 2.5 kilometers past the Steinerne Backstube, the Opferstein and the Franzosenstein. The sacrificial stone is a granite block with a water basin that was once believed to have healing powers. In reality, these depressions were caused by natural decomposition processes. The Franzosenstein appears unstable, but weighs an estimated 100,000 kilograms. There are also three wobbly stones to discover here, including the cradle stone.

In summer, the rocks become an open-air stage: music, sunsets and nature combine to create an unforgettable experience. Whether lively festivals or quiet hiking days - the Wachtstein in the Waldviertel offers both and is a perfect destination for nature lovers and those interested in culture.
