Description

The Dominican Church in Krems is one of the most important buildings from the High Middle Ages. For decades, work has been carried out in stages on the restoration of the exterior and interior. With each construction phase, the colorful medieval appearance becomes more clearly visible. Anyone who still talks about the so-called "dark Middle Ages" today will be proven wrong in the Dominican church. The church was decorated all over with colorful frescoes, the columns painted in various colors. The quality and preserved extent of the paintings are unparalleled in Austria. The jagged drapery in the depiction of Christ is also very special. This medieval stylistic element has only been preserved so well in the Dominican church.
"When you stand under this vault and look up, you get the feeling that a heavenly light is opening up. This blaze of color and the variety of shapes are astonishing, especially as some of the decorations are more than 700 years old," says Doris Denk, Head of the Cultural Department of the City of Krems.

The Dominican Church in Krems' city center has established itself as an additional exhibition venue for the Kunsthalle Krems in recent years. During the summer months, the Gothic church space is always filled with contemporary art. The focus here is on installations that are tailored to the church space.
