The synagogue, built in 1913 according to plans by Theodor Schreier and Viktor Postelberg, is one of the most important examples of Jewish life in St. Pölten. It was severely damaged during the pogrom night on November 10, 1938 and the Jewish community was destroyed. After 1945, the building was returned to the Jewish Community of Vienna - there was no longer a separate community in St. Pölten.
From 1980 , the synagogue was extensively restored. Thanks to recovered stencils, the richly decorated dome was reconstructed true to the original. Since 1988, the adjacent Kantorhaus has housed the Institute for Jewish History in Austria (INJOEST).
From 2022 to 2024, the Former Synagogue was extensively renovated and made accessible as part of Kultur St. Pölten 2024.
Today, it is part of the Museum Niederösterreich and serves as a memorial and cultural site for exhibitions, concerts and events, including the Jewish Weekends. In addition to the permanent exhibition "The Synagogue and its Community", an annually changing exhibition on the upper women's gallery shows themes of Jewish culture.
