Lindenplatz in St. Martin-Karlsbach is home to a very special historical site: The oldest octave bell in the world that can still be rung was discovered here. Today, a mighty lime tree and the lovingly designed memorial square commemorate this extraordinary find and invite visitors to enjoy the special tranquillity of this place.
The traditional discovery site is located just outside the village center and is easily visible from the church area. According to an old legend, the bell buried during the Thirty Years' War was rediscovered by wild boars.
The original bell from 1200 AD now hangs in the church tower and only rings out on high church feast days. A faithful replica of the original bell, which is located in the church area, makes the unique, digitized sound of the octave bell audible to visitors at all times.
