Take the Höllentalbahn from Payerbach to Hirschwang
From late June through late October, you can embark on a special journey every Sunday and on holidays. That’s when the Höllentalbahn departs from the Payerbach-Reichenau station and travels along its 5-km route to Hirschwang—and back.
What to expect on a ride on the Höllentalbahn:
- A ride in historic railcars: Up to eight times a day, the four-axle passenger railcar travels back and forth between Reichenau and Hirschwang. Along the route, you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the Rax.
- Special Tours: Three times a day, you can use your break at the respective terminal stations to take a guided tour of the electrical substation in Payerbach or the railcar depot in Hirschwang—tours are included with your train ticket. Learn more about the schedule and tour times
- Train Ride and Hike: If you enjoy hiking, it’s best to take the first train toward Hirschwang. From there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the Rax Cable Car, or you can hike along the 1st Vienna Aqueduct Trail. Then take the last train back to Payerbach-Reichenau.
2026 is the year of anniversaries in the Semmering-Rax region: 100 years of the Höllentalbahn and numerous other anniversaries will be celebrated.
