Description

The landscape of the Wagram is geologically young, as the loess that covers large parts of the area originates from drifts from the last ice age and is around 100,000 to 10,000 years old.

But there are also older sands and fossil deposits from the sea, which contain interesting fossilized shells and other sea creatures.

The wine itself is of course a special treasure of this landscape, but also the mosaic of the vineyard landscape itself, as deep hollow paths and ditches in the loess criss-cross the terrain between the vineyards. In particular, the Dornergraben in the Felser wine cellar lane, the deep ditch north of Engelmannsbrunn and the bizarre loess quarry of the "Neun Mauna" north of Neudegg are the most impressive features of the loess landscape.

These provide very specific habitats for rare cave breeders such as the bee-eater, little owl and hoopoe.

A visit to one of our loess landscapes is definitely worthwhile!
