Description

WORKING AND LIVING WORLDS OF THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY

In 1990, the former "k.k. privilegierten Modewarenfabrik Hackl&Söhne" was transformed into the Museum Alte Textilfabrik.

Where looms, printing tables and embroidery machines were in operation 100 years ago, visitors are now transported back to everyday working and living life before and around 1900. The tour through the museum vividly brings to life the technology of the individual work processes, the interplay between home and factory work, the economic situation of the textile industry and the social contrasts between the world of the workers and the factory families.

Right next to the museum is the "Pagodenhaus", the only four-span hipped-roof house in Germany before they were even produced.

Special exhibition from May 1 to November 1, 2026:

Women of the 1920s and their fashion

This exhibition sheds light on the profound social changes of the 1920s from the perspective of women - told through their clothing. After the First World War, the role of women changed dramatically: political participation, professional activities and a new body awareness also influenced their outward appearance. The fashion of this period is an expression of awakening, emancipation and cultural rebellion. The aim is to immerse you in the lifestyle of the 1920s through original items of clothing, textile objects, photographs, films, contemporary documents, modern art and interactive stations - with a special focus on the role of the textile industry and everyday working life for women in factories such as the one in Weitra.

The Museum Alte Textilfabrik has been awarded the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality!

Winner of the museum competition organized by Museumsmanagement N.Ö, with an award for creative implementation in the category for sustainability - future-oriented projects - special exhibition 24/25 "FAST FASHION"
