Description

The steep-sided Kalkberg Peilstein in the southern Vienna Woods is 716 m high, lies in the municipality of Altenmarkt and Weißenbach to the east of Nöstach and is popular as a climbing garden due to its steep cliffs to the west. The Peilsteinhaus, built by the Alpine Club in 1923, is located at the summit, while the Peilsteinhütte, built by the Friends of Nature after the Second World War, is located on the hiking trail to Schwarzensee.

The rugged rock owes its appearance to the remains of the Paratethys primeval ocean at the end of the Eocene, around 35 million years ago. Some large fossil ammonites, shells and snails have been found here.
