Pfarrkirche Kirnberg

Description

First mentioned in a document in 1338 as Churenberg in a purchase contract. The parish was elevated to the status of a deanery under Emperor Frederick III in 1459 thanks to a donation from the knight Hans von Plankenstein and was granted jurisdiction. In 1483, after the death of the Plankensteiner, the first monastery was founded - the collegiate monastery - which included 8 priests and a dean. Later, most of the properties were sold and the monastery was dissolved. Under Cardinal Melchior Khlesl, the orphaned deanery was incorporated into the Cathedral Provostry of St. Stephen in Vienna. Bishop Franz Xaver Marxer was an important cathedral provost. He had a baroque chapel added to the church in 1753 and decreed that his heart would be buried under the steps of the chapel after his death. He founded another monastery in 1759. He called the Hironymitan order to Kirnberg, which built a monastery and the church in 1776. This, today incorrectly referred to as a fortification, was dissolved in 1816. In 1905, Kirnberg became an independent parish and the parish church in Pöllaberg became its branch church.
