Description

The museum presents the history of the market town of Gresten and its position within the "three-market district", iron processing, the supply of provisions and the social, religious and economic environment. The former crypt of the charnel house houses an original smokehouse.

The Gothic charnel house, located next to the parish church of Gresten, is home to the Proviant-Eisen-Museum. The museum's name comes from the term "Provianteisen", which was commonly used in earlier times. This term was used for cheap scrap types of iron that were brought from the Erzberg to the Gresten area in barter with provisions (grain and lard). Here, the "Provianteisen" was processed into tools and utensils in numerous forges and hammers.
