Description

The custom of shooting originated from the so-called "bird shooting" - a religious ritual that was supposed to bring good luck and health to the community. Crossbows were used to shoot at a wooden bird, which was attached to the top of a tall pole. Whoever shot the last part down had "shot the bird" and was the winner. With the advent of the firearm, people started shooting at wooden targets.
The Scheibbs Shooting Guild can look back on 430 years of history, making it one of the oldest clubs of its kind in Lower Austria.
More than 200 exhibits are on display in the exhibition rooms of the shooting target museum and in the archive, showing local history, but also political and amusing motifs from 1670 to the present day.
