The St. Pölten City Museum is the historical museum in the center of the old town of Lower Austria's provincial capital - the foundation stone was laid back in 1879. It has been housed in the former Carmelite convent since 1976 and reopened in 2007 after extensive modernization measures.
Today, the building is characterized by a contemporary redesign of the entrance inside and out, a lift in the inner courtyard for barrier-free access and sculptural steel and glass structures. The foyer and cash desk were designed by local designers Doris Zichtl and Marcello Hrasko. The original baroque garden character was also enhanced by removing the planting in the inner courtyard.
The museum has also been renewed in terms of content: with its archaeological and historical sections, which can be visited as a closed tour, the St. Pölten City Museum is now an informative meeting place for art, culture and St. Pölten's history. In addition to the permanent exhibition on archaeology, city history and Art Nouveau, the museum hosts regular special exhibitions and cultural events such as concerts and readings.
Permanent exhibition at the St. Pölten City Museum
The history of St. Pölten from prehistoric times onwards is shown with its most important events. The Art Nouveau section is a valuable highlight and has contributed significantly to the museum's national and international reputation.
The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (unless they fall on a public holiday) and on closing days (January 1, May 1, December 24 to 26 and December 31).
