Heidenreichstein train station

Train station

Description

Heidenreichstein station is not only the terminus of the Waldviertelbahn branch line from Alt-Nagelberg, but is also the operational "heart" of the Wackelstein Express route. The operators of the nostalgic railroad are happy to provide information about the historic railroad operation and are also available to answer questions about the region. The maintenance of the traction engines and railcars also takes place here and the vehicle shed can be visited.

Route information

  • The Wackelstein Express runs on the impressive section of the Waldviertel Railway from Alt-Nagelberg to Heidenreichstein and is operated by the Waldviertler Schmalspurbahn Verein. Events and adventure rides take place on the branch line of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railroad not only during the main season, but all year round. The trains can also be hired individually for a very special event.

Heidenreichstein moated castle

Heidenreichstein moated castle can be reached via two drawbridges and a Renaissance gate. Although the rocky outcrop on which it is enthroned is not overly imposing, the castle with its round corner towers is a mighty structure. The fortress, which is still owned by the Heidenreichstein family, can be visited as part of a guided tour.

Cheese maker's world

The small town in the north-west of the Waldviertel has plenty of excursion and gourmet destinations to offer. One of these should be the Heidenreichstein Cheese Makers' World, because not only will you be spoiled here with delicious cheese specialties and regional delicacies, the petting zoo and the show dairy that can be visited round off the extensive offer of this leisure destination and are sure to satisfy every taste.
