Spillern train station
Train stationDescription
The station in the market town of Spillern, which was renovated in 2016 and opened in 2017, is barrier-free and safe. Thanks to the construction of the separate passenger tunnel, it is no longer necessary to cross the tracks to reach the platforms, and the elimination of the former barrier system means that customers of Vienna's S3 and S4 rapid transit lines no longer have to wait unnecessarily.
The modern, adapted stop has been equipped with monitors, meaning that timetable information and any information about the route is immediately available to rail passengers. Other new features include the Bike & Ride facility, which offers secure storage for bicycles, and the 2 electric charging stations.
Tip: There is also a nextbike rental station at the station. The bikes are available in Lower Austria from April to mid-November. You can find more information on the website https://www.nextbike.at/de/niederoesterreich, or in the nextbike app.
Stroll through town
The specially signposted village walk in Spillern takes you on a leisurely circular route laid out by the municipality and takes in the nearby regional sights - past the golf course and the fire department and local history museum. There are of course plenty of culinary delights on offer - as well as the opportunity to indulge in a bit of shopping.
It is also worth taking a slightly longer walk from the station along the Krumpenwasser to the impressive Greifenstein power station to the south - the second largest power station on the Danube.
The history
In 1884, a mechanical signal box was erected in Spillern to control the railroad operations, as the construction of the safety installations made it possible to increase the throughput speed in the stations.
