An enchanting place for a family vacation or a getaway for two: The charming town of Albrechtsberg in the Waldviertel region is part of the Krems-Land district—and offers beautiful excursion destinations and hiking trails. Among the approximately 140 kilometers of hiking routes, there are also several loop trails. In addition, Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems is an ideal starting point for day trips, for example to the Kamp Valley reservoirs or the Wachau region.
The valleys of the Große Krems and Kleine Krems are particularly interesting from a prehistoric perspective—with fascinating caves where many prehistoric artifacts have been discovered and the impressive Krems Valley Canyon.
The Castle of Albrechtsberg on the Große Krems
The listed Albrechtsberg Castle is considered one of the most magnificent castle complexes in the Waldviertel. It was first mentioned in a document in 1230. Most of the hilltop castle dates back to the 16th century. The castle, situated on a steep hill, can only be viewed from the outside.
Fascinating Krems Valley Caves: Gudenushöhle & Co.
The Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) caves are very popular among climbers and nature enthusiasts. In the 30-meter-long Gudenus Cave, valuable artifacts from the Neanderthal era—dating back more than 70,000 years— were recovered. These are now on display at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. In the Eichmayer Cave, Magdalenian artifacts and numerous skeletons of various bird and mammal species were unearthed. In the Schusterlucke—accessible via the Vettersteig trail—remains of Pleistocene animals were discovered.
Leisure Tips for Families in Albrechtsberg
Milla’s Magic Trail awaits young visitors and their grown-up companions as a magical themed trail: Along a 2.5-kilometer route through the forest, young hikers help the little witch Milla find her lost magic stone with the aid of several information board stations. In the summer, the Els Outdoor Pool is a popular gathering spot for families—featuring children’s and lap pools.
" 3-Dörfer-Blick"observation pavilion on the Albrechtsberger Kraftweg. The observation pavilion near the Albrechtsberg recreational pond is said to possess particularly positive geomantic properties. Starting from the main square in Albrechtsberg, the site can be reached at a leisurely pace in about 20 minutes via the “Albrechtsberger Kraftweg.” After a short climb, you can enjoy the fantastic view and, of course, take in the extremely positive vibrational energy of the place.
