The Waldviertel market town of Amaliendorf-Aalfang is located in the district of Gmünd. In this lively town, sports such as soccer and tennis are very popular. For vacationers, this nature-filled town is an ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding area—such as to the high moor Schrems Nature Park, Heidenreichstein, or the Waldviertel Art Museum.

Amaliendorf-Aalfang: Rocky Terrain with a Long History

Amaliendorf-Aalfang lies in the heart of the Bohemian Massif. As a result, the landscape is dominated by granite. The sometimes whimsical and fascinating rock formations and boulders are typical of the region. Equally typical of the region are bogs, such as the Haslauer Moor, which is located within the municipality’s boundaries.

The rather unusual place name derives, on the one hand, from the fact that weirs were built here in the 17th century for catching eels. On the other hand, Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria was the namesake for a settlement founded by her chief steward. Finally, in 1967, the two villages of Aalfang and Amaliendorf were merged.
