The market town of Purgstall is located on the Iron Road in the foothills of the Mostviertel Alps between Wieselburg and Scheibbs. The area to the north-east of the market is known locally as the "Prater". Excursion destinations that are particularly popular with families include the Hochriess Wildlife Park, where there are 45 animal species and an adventure land to marvel at.
The most famous natural spectacle in Purgstall is the Große Erlauf, which has formed a dreamlike gorge in Purgstall that is second to none. This natural monument, which every Mostviertel resident and vacation guest should see at least once, offers fantastic hiking opportunities.
