The well-known wine-growing community of Straß im Straßertale is situated on the southern slope between the Waldviertel and Weinviertel regions, not far from the Wachau. It is part of the Krems-Land district and consists of the cadastral municipalities of Straß, Elsarn, Wiedendorf, Obernholz, and Diendorf am Walde. The scenic Straßertale valley offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Hikers and families, in particular, enjoy perfect vacations and day trips here—far away from traffic noise and the hustle and bustle.
Straß in the Straßertal Valley: The Most Beautiful Excursion Destinations for Young and Old
At the Museum of Cooperage and Viticulture, visitors can experience traditional crafts up close. A visit to the Elsarn Open-Air Museum is also fascinating: Here, guests follow in the footsteps of the Germanic tribes—surrounded by authentic buildings and artifacts from the 1st to the 5th centuries A.D. A visit to the Marienschlössl Wiedendorf, on the other hand, is very romantic: over 300 varieties of roses can be admired here. You can even spend the night in this rose paradise—in a room with a view of the blooming garden.
Other attractions in Straß include, among others,
- the parish churches of Straß and Elsarn,
- the Straß Fire Department Museum,
- the Obernholz Fossil Exhibition Hall, and
- the Falkenberg ruins, surrounded by natural oak and mixed deciduous forests.
Straß’s world-renowned wines
Strass’s premium wines, which have won awards both at home and abroad, have ensured that Strass has been regarded for decades as Austria’s most award-winning wine-growing community. For example, the local winery owned by Birgit Eichinger received a particularly prestigious award: at the International Wine Challenge in London, her “Riesling Ried Zöbinger Gaisberg 1ÖTW Kamp Valley DAC 2017” was named the world’s best white wine of 2019.
