Zwettl Abbey Gardens

The gardens of Zwettl Abbey: a place of peace and relaxation.

A long time ago, monks began to create places in the gardens of Zwettl Abbey that are reminiscent of paradise. Even today, the gardens are beautiful to look at, offering peace and quiet and time to enjoy. Since the beginning of the 17th century, the gardens of Zwettl Abbey have been gradually adapted to the tastes of the time and since 2006 they have invited not only monks but all visitors to the abbey to linger.

In the Kreuzgärtlein, which visitors can see in summer as part of a guided tour of the monastery, the planting symbolizes the seven days of creation according to Goethe's theory of colors.

The Lindenhof with its old trees and the Abteihof, which exudes a Mediterranean flair in summer when the oleanders are in bloom and countless swallows populate the courtyard, are freely accessible at all times. Even a pair of storks make their nest there every year.

In front of the monastery's orangeries is the upper prelate garden, which is also open to visitors at all times. It has a neo-baroque design and forms the entrance to the Sommerstöckl, which was once reserved for the abbot and his guests. Today, a coffee house welcomes guests to the abbey. The lower prelate's garden is located towards the church.

The terraced gardens are located on the south side of the monastery and can be reached from the Lindenhof. A garden according to Hildegard von Bingen, a Marian garden, a herbarium, the gardens of life and a snack garden were newly created here a few years ago.
