Hut hopping from the Raxalm Mountain Inn, past the Ottohaus, along the ridge trail via the Preiner Wand Cross to the Neue Seehütte. Return via the lakeside trail to the starting point.
Without having to tackle any major challenges, you can “hop” from hut to hut on the Rax. Because of its shorter distance, this version of the popular hike is also suitable for families. However, you should be in decent shape!
The ascent is via the Rax Cable Car, Austria’s oldest passenger aerial tramway, which began operating as early as 1926. After passing the Raxalm-Berggasthof summit station and walking through the Ebenwald forest, you’ll reach the Ottohaus, which features a 4,000 m² alpine garden with about 200 alpine plants typical of the region. Continuing along the ridge trail, a detour to the Jakobskogel is definitely worth it. Via the Preiner Wand and Schröckenfuxkreuz, we reach the Neue Seehütte, which owes its name to a small lake that, however, dried up shortly after World War I. The return to the starting point follows the Seeweg trail.
Your hikes in the Vienna Alps should be a completely beautiful and safe experience. Please therefore note the following:
Preparation
Make sure when choosing the route that it matches your mountain experience and your fitness. Inform yourself in advance about the weather report. Weather in the mountains can change surprisingly quickly. Therefore, always start equipped accordingly (e.g. rain protection).
Check whether the huts and snack stations you want to visit along the way are open. Inform someone about the choice of route and your planned return before you set off.
In fog and strong wind, tours on the high plateau are not recommended!
Always bring appropriate hiking maps. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for the hike, and bring sun and rain protection, as well as water and a light snack. Bring your cell phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
The starting point is the Rax Cable Car. It takes us to the summit station at 1,547 meters above sea level in just a few minutes. From the Raxalm mountain inn near the summit station, we follow the red trail markers to the Gatterlkreuz, then continue on to the Ottohaus. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the first hut on this hike, covering 100 meters of elevation gain. If you’d like to add another summit to your list, you can climb the Jakobskogel (1,737 m), located above the Ottohaus. From there, the trail follows the ridge path past the Preiner Wand Kreuz to the Neue Seehütte. The return route takes you back via the Seeweg.
